Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Prevention, Treatment and Outcomes, NOVA Publications , ss.183-191, 2023
Carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the most common types of gas poisoning. The symptoms of this condition are nonspecific. Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin with higher affinity than oxygen, reducing oxygen distribution to tissues, and tissue hypoxia occurs. Due to the higher affinity of fetal hemoglobin for carbon monoxide, the fetus is much more affected than the mother. The fetal mortality rate in fetuses of pregnant women with carbon monoxide poisoning varies between 36-67%. Abortion, intrauterine fetal growth retardation or anatomical malformations, and neurological problems in the fetus are other effects that can be seen. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy should be considered as a treatment in pregnancy.
