Özet
Purpose:In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the indications of tracheostomy
interventions applied in small animal practice and to reveal its clinical importance in
ensuring airway patency. In this context, 20 cat cases that underwent tracheostomy in
our clinic were retrospectively analyzed.Material - Method: The study material consisted of patient records of 20 cats
brought for surgery to the Department of Surgery Clinic of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and undergoing tracheostomy. The cases
were evaluated regardless of age, gender, and breed. Tracheostomy indications were
classified in terms of laryngeal and pharyngeal pathologies causing upper airway
obstruction, maxillofacial traumas, mandibular fractures, and situations requiring
emergency bypass of the airway. The type of tracheostomy applied
(temporary/permanent), perioperative complications, and clinical outcomes were
analyzed.Results: It was determined that the indication for tracheostomy in the vast majority
of cases was traumatic maxillofacial lesions and laryngeal obstructions. It was
observed that temporary tracheostomy applications were successful in providing
airway patency quickly and effectively, contributed significantly to the stabilization
of the patients, and allowed for a better evaluation of the operation site. No serious
complications were encountered other than minimal local inflammation in the stomal
area.Conclusion:This study shows that tracheostomy is a life-saving intervention in small
animal practice, especially in acute upper respiratory tract obstructions. Correct
determination of the indication and appropriate surgical planning are of critical
importance in ensuring airway patency safely. Tracheostomy can be considered an
effective and reliable alternative airway management method in appropriate cases.Keywords: Tracheostomy, upper airway obstruction, maxillofacial lesions, cat,
