Abstract
Electric
vehicles (EVs) are considered critical technological tools at the heart of
sustainable transportation policies today. Their ability to significantly
reduce fossil fuel use, lower carbon emissions, and increase energy efficiency
makes EVs indispensable for environmental sustainability. Air pollution and
greenhouse gas emissions caused by traditional internal combustion engine
vehicles create serious problems for public health and climate change,
especially in large cities. Electric vehicles offer solutions to these
problems, both reducing environmental impacts and improving the quality of life
in cities.
In Turkey,
the number of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure has increased
rapidly in recent years. As of 2025, the number of electric vehicles registered
throughout Turkey has exceeded tens of thousands, and the number of charging
stations has also increased rapidly. This growth is supported not only by
environmental factors but also by economic and technological incentives.
Government-provided tax breaks, incentives for electric vehicle production and
import, and the development of urban and intercity charging infrastructure are
among the key drivers of this transformation.
However,
increasing consumer awareness also plays a critical role in the widespread
adoption of EVs. Factors such as the cost of electric vehicles, range anxiety,
and access to charging infrastructure directly influence user preferences.
Education and information campaigns contribute to reducing carbon footprint and
increasing energy efficiency by encouraging drivers to use EVs.
This study
evaluates the sustainability dimensions of the widespread adoption of electric
vehicles in Turkey, their current usage status, the challenges encountered, and
their potential for the future. Considering both environmental and economic
sustainability perspectives, the research analyzes the integration of electric
vehicles into Turkey's clean transportation goals.
