Abstract

Globalization has been a powerful force taking over every field for very long time including the field of language education. Any discussion over globalization needs to be extended to include its counterpart; localization; thus having a discussion in isolation is not possible. Teachers of English as a foreign language have long been aware of the fact that global coursebook providers enhance global culture in their coursebooks, however, getting students to identify with these global topics within their local contexts often proves challenging. Teachers experience the frustration of mediating between the global information and local context. It has been observed that students experience the foreignness within the lessons and shy away from exchanging ideas and practising their language skills and, thus, they cannot engage with the language work. One solution to this could be merging the two concepts globalization and localization, readily called glocalization. Our study aims at presenting good practices of glocalization, starting from local culture and local background knowledge and extending to the global topics and information. The study will focus on drawing conclusions from qualitative data extracted from instructors' views from a state university school of foreign languages. In the search for easing teachers mediating role and students motivation, and embedded in global 21st century skills, our study reveals successful strategies to use in English coursebooks for successful application of glocalization in ELT in Turkey.
