Liver fibrosis is occurred as a result of various chronic liver diseases and is characterized by excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins like collagens, proteoglycans, and fibronectin. Progressive liver fibrosis results in a liver failure, portal hypertension and then cirrhosis. Understanding of the stage of fibrosis in liver disease is important for diagnosis and a successful medical treatment. A liver biopsy is still thought as a gold standard for assessing liver disorders. In this review, recent knowledge on the pathogenesis and diagnosis of liver fibrosis were discussed and summarized as basic histological methods.
