Abstract

AIM
The aim of this study was to assess the oral, dental and facial
characteristics of the children with JIA treated in Istanbul
University, Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty and Hospital, Istanbul.
METHODS
Twenty six patients with JIA (mean age: 8,35±3,46) were
matched with twenty four control patients (mean age:
9,25±1,77). The children (mean age: 8,78±2,79) underwent a
systematic clinical evaluation of dental, oral and facial
structures (dental caries index, plaque index, dental
relationship and facial profile) in the pediatric dental clinic of
Istanbul University, Faculty of Dentistry, Istanbul. Data were
analyzed using the chi-square and Mann-Whitney-U tests with a
level of statistical significance at p<0.05,using NCSS 2007&PASS
2008 Statistical Software program.
RESULTS
Indexes of dfs, dft and plaque were significantly higher in the
JIA group than the control group (p<0,05). Also, the presence of
pain while chewing was also significantly higher in JIA group
(p<0,01). Convex facial profile was present in 6 JIA patients and
class II molar relationship was present in 5 (p=0,466).
CONCLUSIONS
In children with JIA, dental practitioner should be familiar with
the symptoms and oral manifestations to overcome the problems
related to the disease.
