Özet
Bu araştırmanın amacı sanal öğrenme ortamlarından biri olan Second Life uygulamasının 5. sınıf düzeyindekesirlerin öğretimine etkisini incelemektir. Çalışma için Second Life ortamında hazırlanmış “Kar Köpekleri”etkinliği kullanılmıştır. Öğrencilerle bilgisayarlaboratuvarında 3 ders Second Life uygulaması yapılmıştır.
The aim of this study is to examine the results of using of Second Life, an online virtual world, in the teaching of fractions at the 5th-grade level. A “Sled Dogs” activity prepared in the Second Life environment was used for this study. The research was conducted in a private school in Istanbul during the 2015–2016 academic year. The study group consisted of 34 fifth-grade students. The mathematics instructor prepared questions on fractions to evaluate students’ knowledge of fractions and was used to assess student performance. It was administered before and after completion of the online activity. Three sessions of the Second Life application were administered to students in the computer laboratory. As a result of the analysis of the data obtained, the average score of the participants from the pre-test was 56.73 and the average score of the same participants was 67.82 in a post-test environment. There was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results (p = 0.000). In addition, the correlation between pre-test and post-test scores is 0.861. In other words, the students who had high pre-test scores also obtained high post-test scores. According to these findings, it is clear that the “Sled Dogs” activity developed in the Second Life environment engaged students and increased their overall academic performance.
