Synergizing Sustainability for Integrated Waste Management. Sustainable Environmental Waste Management Strategies, Alok Prasad Das,Selcan Karakuş, Editör, Springer, London/Berlin , Singapore, ss.1-16, 2026
Waste management consists of collecting, transporting, processing, recycling, purifying, and disposing of waste products and managing, monitoring, and regulating the process. Sustainable waste management aims to keep materials in long-term use, while also minimizing the amount of solid waste disposed of in landfills or through incineration. It is an important element of the environmental management system and an ongoing process requiring continual evaluation and tweaking. Sustainable waste management practices can vary between developed and developing countries and between residential and industrial waste producers. The sustainable waste management process involves several main steps: (i) collection of waste, (ii) separation and physical processing, (iii) recovery of materials or energy from waste, and (iv) recycling into new products. These principles are practical and effective for achieving sustainability in waste management. Sustainable waste management is a central theme of the circular economy system that has attracted global attention, increasing resource efficiency to harmonize the relationship between society, environment, and economy. Paths to sustainable waste management require efficient use of material resources. This is possible by reducing waste production and achieving the economic, social, and environmental goals of sustainable development. This chapter discusses various strategies for sustainable waste management. Developed countries have defined a number of economic and waste management life cycle assessment (LCA) models to determine and evaluate appropriate waste management algorithms. Various innovative solutions are being demonstrated in many countries for the implementation of smart and sustainable waste management plans. Soil, air, and water pollution pose a constant risk to sustainable development. Therefore, waste management is directly related to sustainable development. This chapter clearly states that traditional systems for waste disposal and recycling are no longer sufficient. A society can achieve sustainable waste management goals with the participation of all stakeholders in production and consumption. Sustainable solution proposals for waste management are also discussed in this chapter.
