Comparative Evaluation of Long Bone Morphometry in Parrot Species

This
study aimed to evaluate interspecific morphometric variation among parrot
species by analyzing the maximum length and mid-diaphyseal thickness of four
long bones: the humerus, ulna, femur, and tibiotarsus. Linear measurements were
obtained from specimens representing eight parrot groups: Lovebird, Forpus,
Cockatiel, Lori, Rosella, Green parrot, Alexandrine parakeet, and African grey
parrot. For each specimen, a thickness/length index was calculated, and
segmental ratios including humerus/ulna, femur/tibiotarsus, and total
forelimb/hindlimb length ratios were evaluated at the species level. The
greatest absolute bone lengths were observed in the African grey parrot,
followed by the Alexandrine parakeet and the Green parrot, indicating a clear
size gradient across the dataset. In contrast, Forpus and Lovebird specimens
represented the smallest skeletal dimensions. Evaluation of thickness/length
indices showed that, among species represented by at least three specimens, the
highest humerus index occurred in Forpus (8.75%), whereas the lowest values
were observed in larger-bodied species. The highest ulna index was recorded in
the Cockatiel (6.29%), while the highest femur index was found in the African
grey parrot (8.31%). Overall, the findings demonstrate that parrot species
exhibit distinct patterns of skeletal scaling and limb proportion, reflecting
both differences in overall body size and segment-specific morphological
adaptations.
