Özet

This research was conducted in order to evaluate dressing preterm infants, taking into account possible effects upon sleep time and length of time before discharge. Preterm infants born in the Private Medicana International Istanbul Hospital formed the subjects for the research; 60 preterm infants (Dressed = 30, Not Dressed = 30) that matched the case selection criteria formed the sample for the research. The results of the study revealed that the descriptive characteristics of the two groups were similar (p > 0,05). The results within the group that was regularly dressed were significantly greater than those of the group that was not (p < 0.01), using first and last sleep durations for measurement, as well as the length of time before discharge, both of which were statistically significantly higher than those of the group that was not dressed (p < 0.01). Within the group comparison, statistically significant differences were observed between the first and last sleep durations of the group that was dressed. As a result, it was determined that dressing preterm babies in the NICU has a positive impact on their sleep duration and, ultimately, reducing the length of time before discharge. Therefore, all infants meeting discharge criteria in an NICU should be dressed.
