Özet

The recent studies have demonstrated that neonates, even the extremely premature ones, are capable of feeling pain and responding to painful stimuli. It is also known that exposure to pain during the neonatal period may have both short-term effects, like hemodynamic alterations, respiratory problems, and long-term effects, like altered pain response, behavioral changes. Additionally, exposure to prolonged or severe pain may increase the neonatal mortality. The preterm infant is more prone to painful stimuli because they usually require intensive care unit stay which comes along with many painful interventions. Assessment of pain in the premature infant, its prevention and treatment modalities are dicussed in this paper.
