GEOLOGY AND TRACE ELEMENT GEOCHEMISTRY OF THE BARITE MINERALIZATION IN THE NORTH OF KOCAELİ

Özet

Barite mineralization can be observed as being veins along with quartz of the Sopalı formation which

consists of mudstone, conglomerate and arcosic sandstone of Lower Ordavician within the Kocaeli

peninsula Paleozoic sequence in northern Kocaeli. These barite veins reach up to 50 cm thickness and

contain quartz and feldspar minerals associated with barite. Barite minerals are abundant in partially

ellipsoidal, mosaic textured rocks with varying grain sizes and shapes. The oscillatory extinction

observed in the thin sections of the barites indicates that the mineralization is under the effect of

tectonism. Common sericitization and kaolinization are observed in feldspar minerals. Quartz, barite,

muscovite and albite minerals were determined as a result of XRD studies performed on the samples.

Iron-magnesium-rich minerals such as hematite and clinochlor were encountered in the altered parts of

the veins. In the arcoses, which form the host rock of the mineralization, there is quartz, feldspar minerals

and matrix composed of sericite. Quartz grains are generally of magmatic origin Fluid inclusion data

obtained from the barites indicated a formation from a fluid with moderate salinity (7.5–9.8 wt.% NaCl

eq.) at homogenization temperatures between 114 and 191 °C. According to the trace element ratios

such as CeN/SmN and CeN/YbN, it can be said that the barites are formed by a hydrothermal fluid

dominated by sea water.
