Background: Cleft lip and/or palate comprise the majority of facial congenital anomalies of a newborn. Literature on the psychosocial consequences of this condition on the parents are relatively scarce. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was planned to determine the parenting stress status of parents with a baby diagnosed with cleft lip and palate, and includes parents of infants with congenital cleft lip and/or palate followed in the clinic of a single center. The data were obtained by face-to-face interviews with a total of 60 volunteer mothers and 46 fathers followed in the same polyclinic between May 21, 2018, and May 31, 2020, with the interview form created in line with the literature and the short parental stress index/short form. The scale, for which ethics committee approval was obtained, consists of a total of 36 items and a total of three subdimensions (parental distress, deterioration in parent-child interaction, and difficult child). Results: When parenting stress and its subdimensions were compared according to genders, it was determined that the child-parent dysfunctional interaction subdimension was statistically significant, and the mean score of difficult children was similar in mothers and fathers. Conclusions: Cleft lip and/or palate is a common condition which requires multidisciplinary approach and correction not only due to its physiological consequences but also due to the psychological burden on the shoulders of the parents.
