Özet

Purpose: Neurological surgical procedures are generally considered major surgical

operations with prolonged operation times, and maintaining a stable depth of

anesthesia within safe ranges is of great importance for patient safety. In clinical

practice, the depth of anesthesia is frequently assessed using physical examination

findings and hemodynamic parameters; however, these methods can remain subjective,

especially in major surgical procedures. Therefore, objective monitoring methods are

needed to track the depth of anesthesia. The aim of this study is to evaluate the

applicability of Bispectral Index Monitoring (BIS) for monitoring the depth of

anesthesia in dogs undergoing neurological surgery.Material-Method: In this pilot study, a total of six dogs undergoing neurological

surgery were evaluated. The cases were divided into two groups according to the

anesthesia protocol applied. In the first group, anesthesia induction was achieved using

a combination of butorphanol and propofol (n=3), and in the second group, a

combination of butorphanol, medetomidine HCl, and ketamine HCl (n=3).

Endotracheal intubation was performed in all cases, and anesthesia maintenance was

carried out with isoflurane in both groups. Bispectral index monitoring (BIS) was

applied to all cases during anesthesia. BIS sensors were placed in the frontal region,

and physical examination findings reflecting the depth of anesthesia were evaluated

along with BIS values at specified intraoperative time points. Respiratory and

hemodynamic parameters were monitored and recorded using a conventional bedside

monitor. The obtained data were evaluated using descriptive statistics. Results: In all cases, the applicability of BIS during the intraoperative period and the

continuity of uninterrupted data output were observed. In both anesthesia treatments, it

was determined that BIS values generally remained within the range recommended for

surgical anesthesia throughout the operation. Conclusion: This pilot study demonstrates that bispectral index monitoring is a viable

method for objectively monitoring the depth of anesthesia in dogs undergoing

neurological surgery. Keywords: Bispectral index monitoring, neurological surgery, dog, depth of
