Özet

Introduction and Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the attitudes of Physical Education and Sports teacher candidates towards the teaching profession. Materials and Methods: This research was designed as a mixed methods study, comprising both quantitative and qualitative phases. The quantitative phase was planned using a survey design and employed a purposive sampling method. The qualitative phase was conducted through focus group interviews using a phenomenological design. The data collection tools used in the study included a personal information form, the Teacher Profession Attitude Scale, and a focus group interview form developed by the researchers. Quantitative data were analyzed using the SPSS program, while qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings were then transferred to the MAXQDA Analytics Pro 2020 program. Findings: The research examined teacher candidates attitudes towards the teaching profession, considering factors such as gender, sports career, employment status, and grade level. The results indicate that gender and grade level influence attitudes. The study also addressed teacher candidates' professional preferences, professional handicaps, the future of the profession, and career priorities. Participants made their professional choices based on personal interests and the influence of teachers. Handicaps such as low income and lack of prestige became prominent in career choices. While the future of the profession is seen positively, concerns about income persist. Participants do not consider the teaching profession as a top career priority and are more focused on careers in exercise expertise, academia, and sports. Results: According to the research results, female teacher candidates have different professional attitudes compared to males, and 1st-year students exhibit positive attitudes. The influence of other factors on attitudes was not observed. Personal interest and challenges in the profession play a significant role in teacher career preferences. However, despite all difficulties, teacher candidates evaluate the future of the profession positively.
