Abstract

A coumarin-based chemosensor FCOC (1 N'-(furan-2-carbonyl)-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carbohydrazide) was synthesized, and its sensing behaviors towards different analytes were investigated. The chemosensor FCOC showed discriminative detection pathways to aluminum (III) and hypochlorite anion with distinct fluorescence channels (blue and yellow channels). While FCOC displayed no fluorescence, after the addition of Al3+ ions into the FCOC solution an intense yellow fluorescence was observed. Also, the chemosensor FCOC showed blue fluorescence toward ClO- . Limit of detection (LOD) values were found to be 14.2 nM for Al3+ and 0.238 mu M for ClO- , respectively. Response mechanisms of FCOC to Al3+ and ClO- were proven using different spectroscopic techniques and theoretical calculation. Overall, this study demonstrated that the single chemosensor has the capability of monitoring both Al3+ and ClO- through two different sensing modes.
