Özet
OBJECTIVE: To determine the maternal and cord serum levels of human chitotriosidase as a marker of macrophage activation in normal pregnant women and in women with preeclampsia. STUDY DESING: A prospective case-control study of twenty-eight preeclamptic and 24 normotensive pregnancies. Peripheral venous blood samples were obtained from the mothers and immediately after delivery umbilical venous blood was collected. Maternal and cord serum chitotriosidase activities were determined by a fluorometric approach. RESULTS: Maternal and cord serum activities of chitotriosidase were significantly higher in preeclampsia than control group (p<0.001). There was a significant positive correlation between diastolic blood pressure and maternal and cord serum chitotriosidase activities (r=0.61 and r=0.84 respectively). CONCLUSION: Best to our knowledge, this is the first study to show increased chitotriosidase activity in preeclampsia. Maternal and fetal macrophage activation is demonstrated to be present in preeclampsia.
