Metaverse: A lifelike authentic environment for foreign language learning

ABSTRACT:
Given the changes that extended reality (XR) technologies have brought to our lives, the new buzzword "metaverse" is certainly of interest. The metaverse, which is attracting increasing attention as many world-renowned technology companies turn to it, has the potential to radically transform many areas such as communications, education, commerce, and entertainment with its promising features and opportunities. According to the experts, learners' linguistic action is not based on pure knowledge, but on the experience of knowledge in authentic learning environments. This study discusses extended reality technologies that can empower digitalized educational and training environments with a higher level of experience, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of Metaverse for foreign language learners. With this purpose in view, the importance of the metaverse and its underlying technologies will be explained, and the possibilities that they can offer for foreign language learning in lifelike and authentic environments will be highlighted. It was concluded that authentic language environments in the target language of the Metaverse have great potential to support language learning. In the future, it is likely that virtual reality classes will become more affordable and practical. However, the negative impact of these environments on humans, as well as ethical and regulatory challenges, should be considered.
