Inhalable particulate matter in the atmosphere is an important environmental, health and climate issue in the present. It has been reported by scientists that the mass concentrations of coarse particles show significant decreases over time, but fine and ultra fine particles do not decrease at this level. It is seen that nano-sized particles continue to increase, and it is determined that they contribute up to 90 % in the number concentration of fine particles. The particle size distribution of airborne particles is hugely diverse, ranging from newly formed particles of a few nanometres in diameter through to particles of tens of micrometres in diameter. Although particle number size distribution data have been used widely in source analysis of air pollution in Europe and America, limited studies have been conducted in East Asia and no studies in Latin America, Africa and West Asia including Türkiye. All these studies have shown that size distribution differs between regions, while the nucleation and Aitken modes are dominant in America and Europe, however the coarser modes (accumulation) are effective in Asia. This clearly represents that the regional air pollution sources should be evaluated, and control strategies should be planned differ.
