Özet
Acute respiratory failure is a condition in which the respiratory system cannot fulfill one or
both of its functions of oxygenating the blood and removing carbon dioxide from the blood. As
emergency physicians, they encounter and manage patients with hypoxemic and/or hypercarbic
respiratory problems on a daily basis. Mechanical ventilation is the process of carrying out the
respiratory function with positive or negative pressure through a machine in cases where the
patient cannot carry out the respiratory function on his own or is inadequate. There are two
methods used: non-invasive mechanical ventilation or invasive mechanical ventilation. Non-invasive
mechanical ventilation is a method that applies positive pressure respiratory support
through a mask and device without intubation in patients with spontaneous breathing. Invasive
mechanical ventilation is a method that applies positive pressure respiratory support through
endotracheal intubation. This section aims to provide information about the indications, methods,
and forms of mechanical ventilation application in the emergency department.
