Özet

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to examine nursing students’ awareness of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their perceptions of the global future. Contemporary global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate crisis, migration, and social inequalities have profoundly reshaped healthcare systems. These changes have transformed nurses from being solely clinical care providers into critical “agents of change” in advancing sustainability, health education, and preventive services. This descriptive study was conducted with 229 nursing students enrolled at leading public and private universities in Istanbul during the 2024–2025 academic year. Data were collected using an Information Form, Sustainable Development Awareness Scale, and Perceived Global Future Scale. The findings revealed that 89.5% of students were familiar with the SDGs, and 98.7% acknowledged that nurses have significant roles and responsibilities in achieving them. However, only 14.8% reported receiving any education related to the SDGs during their undergraduate studies. Students’ overall awareness of the SDGs was high (Mean = 166.27 ± 11.19), particularly in the domains of environmental and economic sustainability. The SDGs considered most important by students were “no poverty,” “good health and well-being,” “clean water and sanitation,” and “climate action.” Perceptions of the global future were found to be moderately positive (Mean = 137.20 ± 22.46), with the highest scores observed in the “Future of Health” dimension. Correlation analyses indicated a low but positive relationship between students’ SDG awareness and their global future perceptions. Significant differences in SDG awareness were observed according to variables such as belief in the preparedness provided by undergraduate education for global challenges, year of grade, place of residence, and family income level. The results indicate that although nursing students possess a high level of awareness regarding sustainability, SDG-focused content is not sufficiently integrated into nursing curricula. Global future perceptions appear to influence students’ awareness of the SDGs. These findings emphasize the necessity of systematically incorporating sustainability education into nursing programs and highlight the need for further research to gain deeper insights into students’ perceptions of the global future.
