Özet

Bowel dysfunction developed secondary to spinal cord injury (SCI) has a serious effect on the quality of life of the patients. In this study between 2002-2003, nutritional and excretory habits of 91 spinal cord injured inpatients were evaluated. The characteristics and clinical problems of upper and lower motor neuron type bowel dysfunction were compared according to the neurological level of injury. There was a significant difference in stool frequency and duration of defecation between complete and incomplete SCI patients. Duration of defecation was significantly longer in patients with upper motor neuron type injury than that of the lower. Sensation and discrimination of stool and gas were significantly better in lower motor neuron type of injury. It has been noted that patients haven't been adequately informed about their bowel problems by their primary centre medical staff.
