Özet

Wastewater treatment processes generate substantial amounts of sludge containing a variety of components, including organic matter, nutrients, heavy metals, and pathogenic microorganisms. Municipal treatment sludge, characterized by its high organic content, has potential for reuse in biological processes, whereas industrial sludge often contains more complex chemical pollutants, such as heavy metals and toxic organic compounds. Globally, increasing urbanization and industrialization have led to significant annual increases in sludge production, making sustainable sludge management a critical objective. Improper sludge management results in severe environmental, economic, and logistical challenges, including ecosystem degradation, public health risks, and greenhouse gas emissions. This study aims to evaluate innovative methods for minimizing sludge production and to develop sustainable management strategies. Based on a literature review, the research highlights the importance of integrated treatment approaches tailored to the characteristics of different sludge sources. For municipal treatment sludge, biological and thermal processes such as thermophilic membrane reactors, liquid-phase bioconversion, and thermal hydrolysis are prominent. In contrast, industrial sludge shows significant potential for technologies such as vitrification, pyrolysis, and optimized coagulation-flocculation methods. The study underscores the necessity of employing innovative technologies to reduce the environmental impacts and enhance the economic efficiency of sludge management, emphasizing the importance of adopting a management approach aligned with global sustainability goals.
