Özet

Background: Poor oral health among the elderly is the most common dental problem. Geriatric patient population is a group that requires special attention in terms of the sustainability of good oral health since systemic diseases and various medications are added to the physiological changes that occur with aging. Therefore, the dental teams need to be equipped with specific knowledge and skills to provide the appropriate dental care. This study aimed to detect DMFT index among a group of geriatric patients.

Methods: The study included 86 patients. The patients who were accepted to be examined were included in the study. Values of DMFT (D: Decay, M: Missing, F: Filling, T: Total) index of patients were examined according to WHO standards. Data were analyzed by non-parametric tests and presented as median values and confidence intervals (CI).

Results: The median age of the patients who participated in the study was 68 years (CI: 67-69). The median DMFT index value of the patients was 12 (CI: 10-13). No significant correlation was found between the gender and age parameters of the patients and DMFT indices. In the study, the prevalence of caries in the geriatric patient population was 88.4%; the prevalence of missing teeth was 79.1%, and the prevalence of secondary caries was 58.1%.

Conclusion: In line with the findings obtained from our study, it was observed that the patients did not perform effective oral care. Especially the high prevalence of secondary caries indicates that patients have a high caries risk and need oral care education along with their treatment.
