Özet

Orthodontics is one of the fields of dentistry which was involved in the digital transformation that was experienced intensively in the last decades. With the digitization of conventional workflows, digital data in various formats are analyzed with machine learning tools, so that some suggestions can be produced for the clinician during the decision-making process. With these systems, it is possible to simulate the treatment process in advance and can contribute to patient follow-up and motivation, thereby improving the orthodontic treatment experience. New medical device and sensor technologies make it possible to incorporate new data to increase the efficiency of developed systems.

Although AI systems attract attention with their high speed and accuracy, it should not be forgotten that these systems have a margin of error, and the treatment process and results may differ from those previously simulated. Orthodontists should see these digital systems as a tool and should not hesitate to intervene where necessary.

This chapter aims to categorize the common study topics focused on artificial intelligence applications in orthodontics and to provide information about the general concept and how to implement such tools into practice of orthodontics.
