THE CERAMIC LANGUAGE OF THE REPUBLIC: FÜREYA KORAL, A PIONEER OF CONTEMPORARY TURKISH ART
Abstract With the proclamation of the Republic, art in Türkiye gained a new direction under the influence of modernization policies, and traditional forms of production were re-evaluated within the framework of contemporary art. In this transformation process, ceramic art evolved beyond craftsmanship into an art form integrated with architecture and gaining visibility in public spaces. This study examines the artistic production of Füreya Koral, one of the pioneers of contemporary Turkish ceramic art, within the context of Republican ideology and public art. The research analyzes Koral’s life story, artistic approach, her relationship with architecture, and her applications in public spaces; in particular, her distinctive style is examined through her wall panels and three-dimensional ceramic works. Furthermore, the study evaluates how elements of Anatolian cultural heritage are reinterpreted through a modern perspective in her works. The findings indicate that Füreya Koral played a pioneering role in the development of contemporary ceramic art in Türkiye by integrating ceramics with architecture and social life; she contributed to the dissemination of art in public spaces and had a significant influence on subsequent generations of artists. In this respect, Koral is considered not only an artist but also an important representative of the cultural transformation process of the Republic.
