Abstract
Winter tires are a
type of tire specifically developed to enhance vehicle safety in challenging
winter conditions such as low temperatures, snow, ice, and heavy rain. These
tires offer superior road grip and braking performance compared to summer and
all-season tires thanks to special rubber compounds that maintain elasticity at
low temperatures and deep, lamellar tread patterns that increase grip on snow
and ice. The performance advantage of winter tires becomes particularly
noticeable when the air temperature drops below 7°C, which is critically
important for driving safety.
When the effects
of winter tire use on traffic safety are considered comprehensively, the
contributions they provide in terms of basic driving dynamics such as braking
distance, road grip, steering control, and vehicle stability are of
unparalleled value. In addition, the indirect effects of winter tires on
preventing loss of life and property by reducing accidents should not be
overlooked.
The environmental
dimension of winter tire use is discussed, focusing on its effects on fuel
consumption, exhaust emissions, and resource waste due to the reduction in
accidents and traffic disruptions. The mandatory use of winter tires in Turkey,
the scope of the legislation, and the implementation process are explained
within the framework of the legal regulations applied in Turkey; This study
highlights the benefits of using winter tires, not only for individual driver
safety but also for public traffic order and safety. In this respect, the study
emphasizes that using winter tires is not merely a choice but also a crucial
element of sustainable and safe transportation policies.
