Staying current with advances in medicine is indispensable for clinicians. With the development of networking technologies, scientific information has become easier to access for clinicians. PubMed is the world's best known biomedical search engine. It is updated daily and contains more than 18 million references from 5000 selected journals. In addition to providing access to the same journals located in the MEDLINE database, it also provides access to life sciences journals not available via MEDLINE. Although PubMed is a useful search engine, navigating the large database of articles to find the relevant article is challenging and time consuming. The objective of this article is to present the strategies and skills required for successful and efficient literature retrieval. We will describe the main features of PubMed, medical subject headings (MeSH terms), Boolean logic, and my NCBI account. Throughout the article you will find easy to use online examples from a previous search conducted for a quantitative systematic review focused on the prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia.
