Morphological and Anatomical Investigation of the Vertebral Column in a Red-necked Wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus)

Özet

The vertebral column exhibits species-specific morphological variations that are important for comparative anatomical studies. This study aimed to investigate the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the vertebral column in a red-necked wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus). The atlas exhibited a characteristic rectangular shape with a well-defined incisura alaris, whereas the axis was distinguished by a blunt and robust den. In the cervical region, the seventh cervical vertebra (C7) was characterized by the presence of the foramen transversarium. In the thoracic region, the spinous processes displayed a transitional morphology, appearing rounded in the cranial vertebrae and becoming progressively flattened caudally. In the caudal region, well-developed transverse processes were observed in the proximal vertebrae, gradually diminishing and disappearing in the distal vertebrae. In conclusion, this anatomical characterization of the vertebral column in N. rufogriseus provides baseline data for comparative anatomy and contributes to the veterinary osteological literature on diprotodont marsupials
