Özet
In recent years, due to excessive population growth, uncontrolled urbanization, intensive industrialization, and the wastes brought by industrialization, and in addition to all these, we have to face the problems of depletion and pollution in our water resources as a result of climatic changes that have become unstoppable. As is known, water is the primary substance needed for the continuity of life of all living beings on Earth. The food chain in water begins with phytoplankton communities that serve as primary producers. The existence of a healthy food pyramid that ends with humans depends on phytoplanktonic organisms. Therefore, studies on phytoplankton identification, especially in important freshwaters in the Irano-Anatolian hotspot, were compiled. The studies conducted draw attention to the status of phytoplankton communities, changes that have occurred, possible future scenarios, and necessary precautions. Our review chapter focuses on studies on phytoplankton diversity in important water resources (rivers, dams, lakes, lagoons) in Türkiye, Iran, Armenia, and Azerbaijan located in the Irano-Anatolian hotspot region. In summary, more importance should be given to phytoplankton identification, density, and distribution in ecological studies, and sufficient resources and budgets should be allocated to support researchers so that biomonitoring studies can continue without slowing down.
