A new contribution to the timeline of Gordion (Türkiye): Dating of the Phrygian Citadel at Iron Age Gordion with new tree-ring sequence

Özet
Gordion, an ancient city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the key Iron Age settlements in Anatolia. In the early 2000s, Peter Kuniholm used a collection of well-contextualised archaeological wood from Gordion to build reference chronologies for juniper. The aim of the present study is to date new wood samples uncovered during ongoing excavations. In 2023, 16 samples (14 Juniperus sp., 2 Pinus nigra) were analyzed using standard dendrochronological methods. The results provide dating evidence for construction phases from both the Early and Middle Phrygian periods—specifically, the late 9th century BCE and the early 8th century BCE, around the time of a major fire event ca. 800 BCE. 13 samples contributed to a new 444-year tree-ring chronology spanning 1243–800 BCE. This sequence reinforces the Gordion juniper chronology, a critical segment of the broader Anatolian tree-ring record.
