Abstract

Alumina (Al2O3) is an advanced structural ceramic material which can function in several fields such as refractories, biomaterials, filters, etc. α-Alumina (α-Al2O3) powders with high purity can be achieved through the sol-gel technique at low reaction temperatures. In this study, α-Al2O3 was synthesized with the seeding agent during sol-gel process. α-Al2O3 (Merck, 0.063-0.2 mm) seeding agent was used as 0, 3, 6 and 10 wt.% of aluminium isopropoxide (AIP) starting material. Gelated structures were obtained after drying the opaque boehmite soles at 110 °C for 6h. Finally, heat treatment was conducted at 1300, 1450 and 1600 °C for 2h to acquire α-Al2O3 powders. Samples were characterized considering the X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analyses.
