Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to introduce a novel statistically-based analytical method for evaluating postoperative bone healing in veterinary surgery. This approach has been developed to quantitatively assess bone shape changes following surgical intervention, providing a more objective means of monitoring the healing process. This method holds significant potential for postoperative follow-up and the assessment of surgical success in clinical applications. Materials and Methods: In this study, two mixed-breed dogs were used to evaluate postoperative bone healing. Computed tomography images obtained after surgical intervention were processed for 3D modeling and analysis, comparing healthy and operated bones using geometric morphometric methods. Results: The analyses demonstrated that postoperative bone healing is directly associated with shape changes. Localized deformations and morphological alterations during the healing process were found to be directly related to the fracture site in operated bones. Structural changes different from normal bone morphology were observed. These structural alterations could be visually identified, and their differences could also be quantitatively distinguished through numerical analysis. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that geometric morphometric methods can be an effective tool for evaluating postoperative bone healing. Structural changes associated with the fracture site were successfully analyzed both visually and quantitatively, suggesting that this approach can serve as an objective assessment tool. Further research is needed to explore the clinical application of this method to enhance postoperative monitoring and improve the accuracy of surgical outcome evaluations in veterinary surgery.
