This study deals with the characterization of in-situ MgAl2O4 spinel containing alumina low cementcastable refractories (LCC). The various ratios of MgO (0, 5 and 10 wt %) were added to the refractory castablecomposition. Boehmitic sol prepared by sol-gel routewas added to the castable blend instead of water. Thosecastable refractories were sintered at 1600°C for 4 hoursand then subjected to physical and mechanical tests.Another group of castable refractory crucibles werefilled with steel ladle slag powders [<100μm] andheated to 1600°C for 2 hours for the refractorycorrosion test. Physico-mechanical and corrosion testswere carried out together with the macroscopic andmicroscopic analyses in order to characterize theproperties of in situ MgAl2O4 spinel containing alumina LCC.
