Between April 1992 and December 1995, diagnostic laparoscopy was performed on 16 patients with neonatal cholestasis. In this study group there were 7 girls and 9 boys with ages ranging from 20 days to 140 (mean 69.4) days. Cholangiography was performed in suitable patients following laparoscopic exploration. Diagnosis was confirmed in 11 patients with laparoscopic cholangiography while in 4 patients sufficient exposure could not be obtained and operative cholangiography had to be carried out. In 8 patients with confirmed underlying surgical disease, surgery was undertaken at the same session. No definitive surgery was performed in 2 patients with biliary atresia with severe cirrhotic liver changes and 6 patients with patent bile ducts on cholangiography. One patient died on the third postoperative day due to necrotizing enterocolitis.
