Urbanization and metropolisation are the most considerable phenomenons of the 21st century’s
social, economic, political and spatial platform. Cities that transform into metropolitan due to the
influence of industrialization are being main focus points of their countries; besides, they become
important concentration and control centres in the international arena, depending on the growing relationship level. Istanbul is the most important metropolitan in Turkey; on the other hand, it’s the
economic capital. Therefore, it’s the city that urbanization in Turkey has an ocular increase. The
increasing urbanization and human population growth have resulted in significant loss of habitats in
the urban landscape. In this case, rapid growth in urbanization as an impact of globalization put
pressure on the forests scattered (northern Istanbul) north of the city. This cause many environmental
problems, such as reduction of forest areas and ecosystem deterioration. The ecosystem of forests that provide routing and limiting functions on urban land
use should be protected from direct and indirect interventions. In the presence of this threat, forests
should be taken under conservation by a holistic approach, or sustainability must be provided with the
correct utilization purposes. To ensure the sustainability of these ecosystems, the damaging impact of the local community must be managed.
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the proper resource, user management and appropriate
planning decisions that are necessary for the sustainability of Istanbul's forests on its way to
becoming a global city.
