Lipid peroxidation and antioxidant response were evaluated during sodium nitroprusside (SNP) induced hypotension in 35 patients of ASA I risk undergoing septorhynoplasty in this study. Anesthesia was induced by propofol, fentanyl and atracurium, and maintained with isoflurane, 50% N2O. Following intubation, radial artery was cannulated and blood pressure was monitored. Continuous infusion of SNP was started at 1 μg/kg/min., and titrated to obtain a mean blood pressure (MAP) within the target range of 50-60 mmHg. Blood samples were obtained on 5 stages: Before starting of SNP infusion (stage 1), when MAP was reached to desired level (stage 2), at 30 min. (stage 3), and 60 min after infusion of SNP (stage 4) and 15 min after extubation (stage 5) for the determination of malondi-aldehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels. Blood gases were analysed at the same intervals. Plasma uric acid concentrations were measured at normotensive and hypotensive periods. Malondialdehyde and GSH were not statistically changed at any stages (p>0.05). Blood gases were stable. Plasma uric acid concentration were changed within normal ranges. During potentially cytotoxic SNP-induced hypotension, compared with normotensive periods, there was no significant changes in lipid peroxidation and anti-oksidant response.
