Özet

Generally speaking, international shipping is the act, practice, and process of moving products from one country to another. Although exportation and importation can travel via roads or airways, international shipping is oftentimes associated with traversing waterways like oceans. This latter type of international shipping–international shipping over water–is the focus of this book.

International shipping is an important practice in our world not just because it allows for goods to be traded and shared between countries, but also because it is fundamental to the establishment of trade legislation and international relations between countries. This exchange is also crucial to increasing our knowledge and appreciation of cultures all over the world. That being said, the purpose of international trade is primarily to encourage and maintain economic sustainability for certain countries.

While the concept of international trade seems simple, (after all, at its most basic level it is the sharing and exchanging of goods and products over bodies of water,) the practice of it is complex. The physical act of international trade is not as simple as merely trading Good-A for Good-B, nor is the shipping process as simple as moving the goods from Country-A to Country-B. In fact, all shippers must follow and accommodate the laws of different countries while also ensuring that they have the proper supplies and machines to perform the trade successfully and safely.

This is where you will find this book useful. Through the pages of this book you will learn some of the specifications and aspects of shipping goods internationally and participating in international trade. Of course, international trade and shipping is not a simple task; there is quite a bit of information, such as regulations, that are associated with the process. For this reason, in an attempt to present the information as clearly as possible, the book has been divided into seven (7) carefully written chapters.

We begin with the exposition of what international shipping is, what the task entails, and why it is important. The second chapter then makes a shift towards exploring the different organizations that are known to be associated with international shipping. Next, the third chapter focuses on the legislation; that is, the laws that are set in place to help regulate the practice of internal trade and shipping. The next three chapters (chapters four, five, and six) take their attention to the actual ships and vessels used to ship and transfer goods internationally. Specifically, they will each tackle one of the following topics: the ship itself, the supply of the ship, and the operating management and costs of the ship. Finally, the last chapter will provide for you an overview of ship chartering and the standards of such.

Essentially, this book will allow you to familiarize yourself with the regulations, standards, and operations of international shipping and trade.
