In this study, the scientific and technological infrastructures required for a Glass Fiber and Silica Sand Reinforced Plastic Composite (GRP) pipe operating under internal pressure to be used instead of a concrete or steel Catenary Pole used in rail systems fed by electrical energy were investigated. It was firstly determined that existing water pipes are mostly manufactured with Filament Winding technique with 90 degree Hoop winding and to withstand a maximum internal pressure of 25 Bar. The acceptance conditions for the operation of a catenary pole with a similar cross-sectional geometry and length are the fulfillment of a number of deflection criteria based on Bending Moments. Finite Element based scientific studies and the possibility of converting the existing production machine
As a result of the examinations, it has been determined that new GRP Catenary Poles can be produced at minimum cost with the same layer thicknesses and similar matrix-fiber composite components as the Water Pipes, but this time with a different angular winding approach.
