OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare the outcome of induction using Misoprostol (PGE1), Dinoprostone (PGE2) and Oxytocin administratin in second and third trimester for the termination of the pregnancies of medical indications. STUDY DESIGN: Medical records of 139 pregnancies were reviewed in whom termination of pregnancy was performed in different methods. Consequently, 82 cases were enrolled into the study. Misoprostol was administered in 23 cases, Dinoprostone and Oxytocin were administered in 25 cases and only Oxytocin was administered in 34 cases. RESULTS: When the average interval from start of induction to vaginal delivery was compared it was 10.48±6.3 hours (min. 4.4, max. 30 hours, % 95 confidence interval (CI): 7.75-13.21) in Misoprostol group, 22.12±12.05 hours (min. 7, max. 51 hours, % 95 CI: 17.15-27.09) in Dinoprostone+Oxytocin group and 24.73±23.51 hours (min. 4.3, max. 96 hours, 95 % CI: 16.52-32.92) in Oxytocin group. The median labor period was shorter in Misoprostol group than Dinoprostone+Oxytocin group and Oxytocin group (p=0.0078). However, the median labor period in Dinoprostone+Oxytocin group was not statistically different to Oxytocin group. Moreover, Misoprostol administration costs among 370.000-750.000 TL per patient, which is the cheapest method for induction. CONCLUSION: Misoprostol is an effective and cheapast agent with acceptable side effects for termination of second and third trimester pregnancies and it might be used as a first line regimen.
