Objective: The aim of this study was to search for personality disorders in mothers of children diagnosed with autistic disorder according to DSM-IV. Method: Interviews were made with mothers of children diagnosed with autistic disorder (n=48) using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID-II). Results: Twenty-five percent of the mothers were found to have at least one personality disorder. The most common personality disorder diagnosis was avoidant personality disorder (8.3%). Schizoid personality disorder (6.2%), dependent personality disorder (6.2%), obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (6.2 %) and paranoid personality disorder (6.2 %) were the other diagnoses made in the mothers. When tendencies were considered, paranoid, obsessive-compulsive and avoidant personality features were the most frequent tendencies seen in the mothers of autistic children. There was no diagnosis of Cluster B personality disorder. Conclusion: The most frequent personality disorders found in the mothers of autistic children seemed to be related to social and communication problems, which constitute the essential symptoms of autistic disorder. It can be stated that personality disorders and personality features found in the mothers of autistic individuals may be another expression of the genetic material that causes autism. © Universitätsverlag Ulm GmbH 2009.
