Abstract

According to the Public Health Agency of Turkey, rate of cesarean births among all births in Turkey was 21% in 2002 while increased to 48% in 2012. Cesarean section is a safe surgical procedure today however it is still a major surgery, so all complications related to abdominal surgery can be seen in caesarean section. 500 ml hemorrhage in spontaneous vaginal delivery and 1000 ml blood loss after caesarean section are defined as postpartum hemorrhage. Postpartum hemorrhage is one of the most common causes of maternal mortality. The most common cause of postpartum hemorrhage is uterine atony. The epigastric artery injury is a rare complication. The deceased in our case who have already had a congenital cardiac disease, after being discharged from hospital on the second day of caesarean section, worsened and died at home. During autopsy, it was found that the left inferior epigastric artery is totally cut. 1. Board of the Council of Forensic Medicine has reported the cause of death as the internal bleeding resulted from the left inferior epigastric artery injury during caesarean section. It should be noted that the risk of epigastric artery injury in caesarean incisions due to its location and mobility, therefore the inferior epigastric artery must be checked during the operation.
