Özet

Hybrid ormosil (organic-inorganic) solutions can be used to coat float glass samples in order to increase their strength. The ormosil solution in this present work contains silane, epoxy resin and hardener based on Al-alkoxide. The glass samples were indented at their center in order to create artificial flaws. A dip coating process with a controlled withdrawing rate applied to the indented glass samples. In order to develop the best coatings, a number of parameters such as withdrawing rate, curing temperature were examined. It was determined that the optimum conditions were reached with 5 cm/min withdrawing rate, 200°C for 1 hour curing time and temperature. Strength of the samples was measured by applying Ring-on-Ring (ROR) tests. Linear elastic fracture mechanics and Weibull statistics were applied to examine and interpret the strength results. The results showed that, sol-gel ormosil coatings of glasses resulted in an increase in strength values more than 200 % compared to that of indented glass samples. It was also observed that the coating thickness had no important effect on the strengthening.
