Özet
The quality of prosthetic rehabilitation highly depends on the level of collaboration between the dentist and the dental technician. The technician provides material for clinical procedures by processing the material delivered from the clinic. The quantity and the quality of material delivered to the dental laboratory draw the borders to the dental technician. For example, the fit of a custom impression tray to the impression area can at most be as good as its fit to the cast that it is constructed on which is bound to the quality of the preliminary impression. Written and verbal communication is another key factor to achieve better results from physical materials exchanged after each phase of the overall treatment. Throughout this reciprocal workflow, the responsibility of the outcome is on the clinician. Therefore, in addition to performing proper clinical work, the dentist must be equipped with not necessarily the ability but the knowledge of laboratory procedures to be able to manage the overall process accordingly. Clinicians’ use of a dental surveyor in planning and designing removable partial dentures (RPDs) improves the quality of preprosthetic preparations and the resultant prosthesis. The basic principles of surveying and steps of laboratory procedures are summarized in this chapter.
