The Effect of Jigsaw Activities Enriched With Augmented Reality On Success Relating to the "Particulate Structure of Matter"

Özet
The aim of the study is to examine the effect of Jigsaw and Jigsaw activities enriched Augmented
Reality (Ar-Jigsaw) on academic achievement, which were developed on the subjects of
"Particulate Structure of Matter and Pure Substances" in the 7th Grade Science course. The study
was conducted in accordance with the quasi-experimental pattern with pretest-posttest control
group. The study group consists of 109 secondary school students studying in three different
classes in the 2019-2020 academic year. Study groups randomly assigned as 7 / D experiment I
group (N = 37), 7 / E experiment II group (N = 36) and 7 / A control group (N = 36). Teaching of the
subjects was conducted with Jigsaw activities in the experiment I group, Jigsaw activities enriched
with augmented reality in the experiment II group and the activities included in the Science
Textbook (Seyrek, Türker, Bozkaya, and Üçüncü, 2019) approved by the Ministry of National
Education for the 2018-2019 academic year in the control group. The application lasted four and a
half weeks in total, 4 lesson hours per week (1 lesson = 40 minutes). As a data collection tool in
research; Developed by Özyalçın and Avcı (2019), the "Particulate Structure of Matter and Pure
Substances Achievement Test" was applied to all groups before and after the application as a
pretest-posttest. SPSS program was used to analyze the data. As a result of the research: It was
determined that there was a significant increase in the success of the Experiment II group students
compared to the control group students. When the effect sizes are considered; There is a medium
effect value between Experiment I-Experiment II and Experiment I-Control groups, and a large
effect value between Experiment II-Control group. This result shows that Ar-Jigsaw activities are
more effective in increasing success than other activities.
