Özet

The development of functional and sustainable elastomers has gained great scientific and industrial interests in recent years due to the increasing technical and social awareness on the sustainability, recycling, and limited fossil-based petrochemical resources as well as some hazardous effects of plastic wastes on nature. Sustainable elastomers can be defined as the elastomeric materials produced from natural and/or renewable sources and categorized into “wholly bio-based” and “partially bio-based” elastomers. Enhancing structural and mechanical properties of bio-based elastomers by modifying their chemical structures and employing specific additives and/or fillers to improve functionality and application performance has been recently popularized as a thematic issue in the polymer science and technology area. This chapter comprehensively reviews the following issues; (i) classification of sustainable elastomers and fundamental information about chemical features of bio-based raw materials, (ii) manufacturing techniques of functional sustainable elastomers, and (iii) their application potential and examples in some specific areas such as self-healing elastomers, shape memory elastomers, strain/compression sensors, medical parts, etc. Consequently, recent trends in formulation, preparation, and characterizations techniques and future perspectives in sustainable elastomers are concluded.
