Özet

Compounds containing quinone building blocks have various application areas in such as anti- cancer agents, fungicides, herbicides, anti-bacterial agents, and dyes. Because they have a wide range of uses many research groups have studied these structures for years. Plastoquinone (PQ), 2,3-dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone derivatives, is found in the photosynthesis chain as electron transporters, especially. This property makes plastoquinone derivatives have special importance in medicinal chemistry.

The structure of PQ contains a benzoquinone ring and a polyisoprenoid side chain. In our previous studies, it is proved that thiol and amine derivatives of naphthoquinones possess marked antibacterial, antifungal, antitumor, cytotoxic, and anticancer activities. Therefore, in this study, some aryl thiols were attached to the plastoquinone instead of the polyisoprenoid chain. As a result, it is not surprising to wish to obtain new thio-substituted plastoquinone with biological properties such as anti bactericidal, antifungal, or anticancer effects.

Here, we will see the synthesis of some arylthio substituted plastoquinones. Then the antibacterial and antifungal activities of plastoquinone derivatives were evaluated against four gram-negative bacteria, three gram-positive bacteria, and three fungi strains. The obtained results were compared with other plastoquinone analogs.
