Özet

Mechanical design and assessment of railway tracks require and understanding of causes generating forces upon them for which they are designed or assessed for and estimation of these force values. Vertical forces exerted by the wheels of moving trains on the tracks can exceed their static values. Major causes of these increased forces; known as dynamic impact forces, are track roughness in the forms of variation of track profile, variation of track stiffness and discontinuities along rails due to dips and joints and wheel roughness in the forms of wheel flats and wheel polygonization. Estimation of dynamic impact force values mainly rely on empirical methods, numerical methods and experimental methods through instrumentation. This paper introduces a hypothesis named as the ‘Ankara Hypothesis’ concerning the generation of vertical dynamic impact forces on railway tracks. The paper then introduces a new analytical method recently introduced as the ‘Bezgin Method’ that mathematically represents this hypothesis and produces a set of analytical equations that one can use to estimate the dynamic impact force factors due to track and wheel roughness. This paper focuses on the estimation of dynamic impact forces on railway tracks due to track roughness that may occur along transition zones of railways where the profile and/or the stiffness of the track structure can change.
