Thymus genus (Thyme) from the Lamiaceae family naturally grows in Mediterranean regions. Ever since Turkiye has favorable climate and geographical features for the thyme, which is an aromatic herb rich in volatile oil, many Thymus species with a high endemism rate are grown in Turkiye. The plant, which contains volatile oil including thymol, carvacrol, borneol, or linalool, which are used for different purposes in different cultures, is at the forefront in Turkiye as a spice and for the treatment of colds, stomachache, and diabetes. Moreover, anticancer, antiproliferative, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, spasmolytic, antihypertensive, and antidiabetic effects of thyme have been demonstrated in different scientific platforms. Although there are limited clinical studies on the use of Thymus sp. in the current literature, traditional uses for many years without any problems increase the interest in the health application of thyme.
