There is an old adage as known by everyone. “To understand today, one needs to know the past well”. Therefore, in order to understand today’s Turkey’s economic history, one should know the heritage of economic conditions that Turkey had been given. Economic heritage has the roots of economic circumstances during the Ottoman Empire. Economic circumstances consist of financial and political situations. On account of this, in this study, the process leading to financial activities in the Ottoman Empire including banking sector and the financial instruments used in this epoch, are discussed. Political situations are not the subject of this discussion.
